  • Description

Welcome to this module on Primary Healthcare issues.

The purpose of these study units is not to train primary healthcare workers, but wellness counsellors and coaches in rendering support to people with challenges in these areas.  Wellness counsellors and coaches are trained professional who provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support to clients in health related areas. Although they are not medical professionals, their contribution is complementary to that of the primary healthcare provider.  Hence, it is imperative for them to have a working knowledge of primary healthcare topics and to understand the basic terms and concepts.

Here is exactly what we cover in this course:

The training programme covers the following three aspects:

    • Paediatric palliative care for those counsellors who work with children
    • Primary health care diseases:  Common diseases and injuries and endemic and communicable diseases.
    • Maternal and childcare for those who counsel pregnant clients or with the potential to work as birth companions

Upon completion of the training programme the candidate will have the competencies to counsel and coach in the spectrum of primary healthcare challenges with reference to clinical and ethical aspects.  This module form part of an accredited course in wellness and counselling skills.
